Everybody Celebrates!

By Steven Hicks
Kwanzaa is a time of reflection!
Kwanzaa is a time of reflection!

At the beginning of the school year, my students learned about themselves. Then, we moved through lessons about their friends, family and community. In this unit, my students continue to study the world around them. They'll begin to discover diverse cultures and how they celebrate holidays. More specifically, they'll experience celebrations of La Posada, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa. If you've never taught lessons about these celebrations before, I suggest you start with only one this year.

OBJECTIVE
Students will:

  1. Listen to stories about diverse celebrations.
  2. Learn about these celebrations through active participation.

LESSONS FOR THIS UNIT
Lesson 1: Celebrate La Posada in Mexico!
Lesson 2: Celebrate Hanukkah in Israel!
Lesson 3: Celebrate Kwanzaa in the United States
