Lessons & Activities (PreK-2)
While the topic of oceans and other bodies of water and the creatures
that live there can be used year-round, it is particularly well
suited for warmer months. This unit builds on student interest
in and prior understanding of this topic by exposing them to new
animals, as well as by focusing their attention on interactions
between animals and their watery environments and how their adaptations
enable them to survive.

Ocean Environments
These activities provide an introduction to ocean
environments and the kinds of creatures that live there. In the Internet
Field Trips, students will also use the Internet to obtain information.
In Ocean Life, students practice classification skills and recognize that
different kinds of plants and animals belong to different environments.
Finally, At the Aquarium introduces students to another kind of environment
where aquatic animals can live.

Lakes, Ponds, and Rivers
In this set of activities, the mini-books give
students practice with nonfiction reading skills while learning about
pond ecosystems. Students also explore the life cycle of frogs and increase
content-area vocabulary. Finally, in the course of playing games, students
learn about the dangers fish encounter in a river environment (Racing
Downstream), and practice basic computational skills (Adding Lily Pad
Points).

Animal Adaptations
Aquatic animals have characteristics or adaptations
that help them survive in their environments. Students will expand
content-area vocabulary and practice nonfiction reading skills in
these activities. They will learn about the behavior and characteristics
of whales. They also discover how ocean animals are adapted to protect
themselves from predators, and they describe and record their observations
about goldfish.
