Discuss with children
the different ways that people get to school. How many of them travel
in one (or more) of the following ways: walking, riding in a car, taking
a bus, riding a bike? How many travel to school in other ways? You might
mention that some children travel to school in very unusual ways.
Explain that in many
cases the environment in which children live determines the type of transportation
they use. Children from places where it is cold and snowy may ski or take
a snowmobile to school. In places near the water, children may take a
motorboat or a vaporetto. Children who live in hilly or mountainous areas
may take a gondola or cable car to school. And some children even take
helicopters or horses and buggies. Ask the class if there are any other
types of transportation children might need to get to school and how it
relates to their environment.
