About Literature Connections

Special days throughout the year warrant special attention. What better way to highlight special days than with an emphasis on great children's literature selected to dovetail with those important calendar connections? "Literature Connections Day-by-Day" is designed to help you do just that.

Several specific days each month have been selected with a list of picture books, novels, poems, and activities relating to the days. Teachers may want to devote additional class time to some of the dates by creating mini-units using the activities. Older students can be encouraged to divide the book list among themselves and read one selection each from the list. Teachers of younger children may want to read aloud some of the books from the list.

Although most of the books included are picture books, the authors believe that picture books add a wonderful dimension to literature study for every age level, not just the primary grades. Poetry has been included as well because of its overall importance in the literature curriculum.
