Activity 3 — Writing a Profile

Teacher's Notes

Use what you've learned so far and write a profile of anyone you know — a friend, family member, shopkeeper, teacher, anyone. A profile is a story that tells the reader about a specific person — what they're like, what they're doing with their lives, what their hopes and dreams are and what their experiences have been. They are like mini biographies.

1. Remembering the interview lesson, ask your subject questions about their life and interests. (Ask follow up "Why" questions to get more details.) Tape-record the answers or take notes and use actual quotes from your subject in your writing.

2. Using the "details" lesson, take note of anything about the person or the surroundings that might reveal something to the reader such as clothes, mannerisms, voice tone and room decor.

3. Write a story with an entertaining lead. No "My profile is about so-and-so. I asked him/her about . . ." Start with a detail or an anecdote.

4. In the profile, organize your thoughts carefully and write with as many details as possible, and be imaginative in word choices and descriptions.
