Activity 4 — Writing a Review
For this assignment, you will review a movie, video, book, tape or cd, television show, or play. Please read some reviews in newspapers and magazines before writing it.
Here are some dos and don'ts:
DO: Write a lead that will pull in the reader. Your lead can be straightforward, as in "Space Jam is one of the best movies in recent years," or it can be more creative, "The tremendous rock hurtles down the chute bearing down relentlessly on Indiana Jones . . ." (about Raiders of the Lost Ark)
DO NOT: Start off your story "I am writing about so and so . . ."
DO: Tell your reader the basics of the story (or if its music, the style of music and what the lyrics are about). Make sure the reader understands what is happening.
DO NOT: Skimp on this section — no one-paragraph reviews.
DO: Tell your reader what you liked or didn't like and why — in detail. Remember, details are essential.
DO NOT: Say "I liked it, that was cool." We need to know what was cool about it.
