Seed Mystery!

Adapted from SuperScience Red, March, 1995, issue.

Answer: A combination of variables helped the seedlings grow after a fire. The fire burned down tall trees, which opened up spaces so sunlight could reach the forest floor. Ashes from the fire supplied the soil with essential nutrients, making it healthier and more conducive to growing. In addition, certain trees, like lodge pole pines, need heat to release their seeds.
