Life in the Rain Forest:
Four Worlds in One

Activity: The class learns about the four different layers of the rain forest: the emergent layer, the canopy, the understory, and the forest floor. Students will see how each rainforest layer is a unique habitat for different plants and animals.

  1. Explain that the rain forest is made up of several layers.

  2. Explore the two sites below to learn about the climate, plants, and animals of the different layers of the rain forest.

  3. Have students create a bulletin board mural of the rain forest showing the different layers. For each layer, write important facts, such as the plants and animals found there, on a piece of paper. Connect each paper to the correct layer of the rain forest with a colorful ribbon.
