Where Can Seeds Sprout?

Adapted from SuperScience Red, March, 1995, issue.

In this activity, students test whether or not seeds need to be in soil to sprout. (This may be a good time to introduce the word GERMINATE, the scientific word for when a seed starts to grow.) We've kept other variables, like sunlight, water, and air, constant: The seeds in the egg carton do not get sunlight, but they do get air and water. Students can try to sprout seeds in a clump of hair, cut-up plastic, glitter, etc. All of our seeds sprouted in the materials we tested! Most seeds need only air and water to germinate.
