To help you figure out the sequence of events in a story, look for signal words such as first, then, next, suddenly, at the same time, before, and after.

First: The shark swims up to the narrator's boat.

Next: The shark wiggles his fin and the narrator can't resist.

After that: The neighbors get nervous about Rover.

Then: The narrator gets a great idea about how to get the neighbors to like Rover.

Finally: Rover swims away because he's chasing a speedboat.
