Complete the chart below with causes or effects from "The New Addition" on the previous page. Then on another sheet of paper, write your own cause/effect statement based on the story.

When the author doesn't state the cause directly--why something has happened--look for clues in the story. Then think of the effect--what happened.

Effect	Cause
War broke out in Sarajevo.	One group of people wanted to gain control of the country.
Elena's grandparents had been taking care of her.	Elena's parents were killed in the war.
Elena's grandparents had given her up for adoption.	Elena's grandparents couldn't take care of her because they were old and sick.
Nina was angry and depressed.	An adopted sister was coming, and Nina thought her parents would fuss over her new sister.
