Zounds!

Sounds are made when something shakes, or vibrates. Things that are different sizes make different sounds. A big drum makes a booming sound. A little drum makes a higher, lighter sound.

You can't see a sound. But you can see how something vibrating causes sound.

Make a musical instrument out of rubber bands.

1. Use the top from a shoebox or some other cardboard box. You can decorate your box top with colored paper and glue.

2. Stretch rubber bands of different sizes across the box top the long way.

3. Pluck on the rubber bands.

Can you see the rubber bands vibrate?

Can you write a rule that tells how the size of the rubber band changes the sound it makes? Try it!
