FASTT Math and the Common Core State Standards

The Common Core State Standards call for ALL students to be fast and accurate with math facts in all four operations by the end of Grade 3. Students are also expected to develop number sense by understanding relationships between numbers within operations. By developing these fluencies, students can then successfully focus on higher level math skills.

FASTT Math provides the most efficient, personalized path to fact fluency for every student. And now, FASTT Math Next Generation is the only fact fluency program to extend beyond math fact fluency practice into more rigorous Common Core objectives.

How FASTT Math Supports the Standards

Fluency With Math Facts

The Common Core State Standards call for students to be fast and accurate with facts in all four operations by the end of Grade 3 in order to succeed in higher-order mathematics. Students are also expected to develop number sense by understanding relationships between numbers within operations.

FASTT Math Rapidly Accelerates Students Toward Fact Fluency

  • Assesses each student’s initial fact fluency and provides 10-minute daily sessions of computer-based adaptive instruction in English and Spanish.
  • Provides practice for accuracy and speed in addition and subtraction facts within 0–24 and multiplication and division facts within 0–144.
  • Employs the research-validated FASTT algorithm to build fact fluency and reduce recall time to 0.8 seconds or less.
  • Extends beyond fact fluency to more rigorous practice aligned to the Common Core with STRETCH-To-Go, including inverse relationships, recognizing unknowns, multi-digit operations, associative and commutative properties, number composition, and fact families.

Increasing Opportunities for Independence & Using Technology

The CCSS expect students to demonstrate independence while becoming self-directed learners. Furthermore, students should employ technology to integrate what they are learning.

FASTT Math Rapidly Accelerates Students Toward Fact Fluency

  • Students, not teachers, operate FASTT Math's research-based computer software, which adapts to each student's preexisting knowledge and instructional needs.
  • Students play independent, self-paced practice games.
  • Students reach their goals faster with the NEW Student Dashboard, which allows students to see themselves moving forward every day while gaining ownership of their learning.
  • Actionable, data-rich reports motivate students to take control of their achievement.

How FASTT Math Supports the Standards

Importance of Understanding

The CCSS expect students to understand place value for single and multi-digit operations with whole numbers and decimals.

FASTT Math Promotes Conceptual Understanding

  • Builds conceptual understanding of single-digit operations through quantity and mental math strategies using lessons from the NEW Teacher’s Guide.
  • Develops math fact fluency—through expanding recall—in all four operations, laying foundations for higher-order mathematics with multi-digit whole numbers and arithmetic.
  • Ensures every student is appropriately challenged with adaptive instruction that creates an individualized learning progression for each student based on performance.

Importance of Visual Representation

The CCSS expect students to understand the meaning of multiplication and division through activities that make use of visual models, such as arrays.

The CCSS also emphasize that students on the path to college and career readiness should look for and recognize the structure and patterns of mathematics.

FASTT Math’s Adaptive Software Utilizes Visual Instruction

  • Utilizes arrays to provide visual representations of students’ non-fluent facts.
  • Introduces fact pairs (such as 3 x 7 and 7 x 3) simultaneously and uses visual models to support students in recognizing the pattern of the commutative property.

Progressive Foundational Development

The CCSS call for students to develop an understanding of fractions as numbers, extending to equivalence, ordering, and operations with fractions.

FASTT Math Builds Strong Foundations

  • Develops math fact fluency in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division as a necessary base for extending knowledge into higher-order mathematics.

Extending Previous Understanding

The CCSS call for students to apply and extend previous understandings of operations to fractions and compute fluently with multi-digit numbers, as well as find common factors and multiples.

FASTT Math Deepens Understanding at Each Student's Unique Pace

  • Promotes retention of fluent facts for multi-digit computations through 18 engaging and motivating NEW games.
  • Supports the transfer of learning to paper and pencil with customized practice sheets.
  • Provides multimodal presentation of math facts (visual, auditory, and kinesthetic), laying the foundation for finding common factors and multiples.

Focus on Strategies to Solve Problems

The CCSS expect students to solve real-life and mathematical problems using numerical expressions. Students’ understanding of arithmetic should extend to algebraic expressions. Students should also be able to generate equivalent expressions and understand connections between proportional relationships.

FASTT Math Creates Efficient Problem-Solving Strategies

  • Provides adaptive lessons and activities to develop automaticity, improving students’ ability to solve real-life and mathematical problems.
  • Creates efficient strategies for solving problems, expressions, and linear equations by developing rapid retrieval of math facts.
