Activities and Ideas for BookFlix Subscribers December 2007
Winter is (almost) Here!
Snowy Weather Days
The first day of winter is just a few days away on December 22nd - here are a few ideas on how to incorporate BookFlix into your classroom lessons or seasonal story time programming:
  • Use the pair, The Snowy Day and Snowy Weather Days or Snowflake Bentley and Snow, to introduce students to some of the activities and events that are unique to winter - snowing, shoveling, and sledding. The video storybooks and photographs in the nonfiction eBooks will help build mental models for those students who have never seen snow before!

  • Turn a literacy lesson into a science lesson. After watching the story and reading the book, discuss how and why snow melts. Try the following simple demonstrations to help children understand that heat can change the form an object takes:
    1. Melt a stick of butter on a stove.
    2. Leave a popsicle on a sunny windowsill.
    3. Add boiling water to Jell-O.

  • Get creative by having students craft their own snowy day scenes. Provide students with cotton balls, black and white construction paper and other art materials - let their imaginations run wild!
