Marilyn Burns, one of America’s most trusted math educators forms Math
Solutions Professional Development, an organization dedicated to the improvement
of math instruction in Grades K–8.
Working with a highly qualified team of inservice leaders, Marilyn offers
specialized courses to teachers and administrators worldwide. Math Solutions becomes the country’s
pre-eminent provider of professional development in math.
Marilyn’s work in thousands of schools provides her with unique insight
into the needs of struggling learners. She turns her professional focus to developing curriculum for
these students that will provide them with a solid foundation in arithmetic understanding and skills,
and is designed to address the most common misconceptions she has observed.
Marilyn assembles a group of Math Solutions master teachers for this ambitious
project. The team spends over two years drafting, testing, debating, and refining each lesson in the
program under Marilyn’s leadership.
Marilyn partners with Scholastic to develop and publish the program.
The program is piloted in 7 schools and is enthusiastically embraced by teachers
and students.
Scholastic publishes Do The Math, a new intervention program focusing on
number and operations for students in Grades 2–8.
Scholastic enters into a partnerships with several large districts to document
the efficacy of this program.
Math Solutions develops new two-day and five-day courses specifically designed
to work with Do The Math, offering educators a full solution for raising achievement in math.
