Program Overview

The Challenge
61% of America's 4th Graders are not proficient in mathematics, as measured by the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP).

The most recent National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP) data does not tell an encouraging story: Across the country roughly 2/3 of students are scoring at or below basic as measured by the NAEP Mathematics test.  Furthermore, the gap in performance between subgroups persists.  The failure to  build a solid foundation in arithmetic skills and understanding leads to a gap that gets wider with every passing year.

Teacher and Math Students
The Response: Introducing Do The Math

Do The Math was created specifically for those students who are struggling in math and who need more than what the teacher can provide in the context of regular math instruction.

Do The Math helps struggling students and their teachers in three important ways:

  1. Targeted Content: What Do The Math rebuilds

Do The Math rebuilds the critical foundations for algebra by focusing on fluency with whole numbers and fluency with fractions.  The program scaffolds these topics even further, moving from basic concepts to more complex operational work. Students spend more time on key concepts over the course of multiple lessons, providing the time they need to learn, process, and build a deep understanding.

  2. Pedagogy & Instruction: How Do The Math engages students

Do The Math is designed around eight research-based instructional practices for struggling students: Scaffolded Content, Explicit Instruction, Multiple Strategies, Gradual Release routines, Student Interaction, Meaningful Practice, Assessment & Differentiation, and Vocabulary & Language to help differentiate and meet the needs of every student.

  3. Teacher Support: Why Do The Math works for teachers

The lessons in Do The Math were developed using a Research Study Lesson model that supports teachers in understanding and delivering effective math instruction.  Do The Math embeds professional development and point-of-use support into every lesson with clear steps for easily and effective managed teaching. Strategically placed throughout the program, these supports ensure all teachers will feel comfortable and confident with the content in Do The Math.
