We can’t believe it’s already June! Summer is just around the corner, and with it will hopefully come the opportunity for some unwinding and re-charging. Whether your program is closing for the summer or you’re continuing through the summer months, you and the children in your program have accomplished a great deal during the school year, and now is the perfect time for them — and you — to have some summer relaxation and fun! If your program is remaining open for the summer, remember that ECT is just a click away — with outdoor activity ideas, printable resources and giveaways, and as always, over 2,000 articles in our searchable archive.

One of the inevitable (but difficult) aspects of the school year’s end is saying goodbye to friends. Susan Miller’s terrific feature article focuses on ways to help children say good-bye to their classmates and friends, whether temporarily for the summer or permanently, for children who are moving away or changing schools. She also provides some great ideas for helping children stay in touch with each other over the summer and for preparing children for a new classroom and new friends. Learning to “make new friends, but keep the old” is a skill that will serve young children well throughout life, and there’s a lot that you can do to help them do this.
We’ve got great activity ideas this month that you can send home with children for the summer — parents will appreciate having fun, pre-planned activities to enrich the summer days. We’ve also provided some important summer safety tips that you can utilize at school or send home to families. It’s never too early to make sure that children are focused on safety, and the relaxed atmosphere of summer provides the perfect opportunity for teachers and parents to have these conversations with children.
When we launched the new ECT site back in September, we had no idea how fast the school year would fly by. We’ve learned a lot in this first year of being online, mainly from the terrific feedback we’ve gotten from you about what your needs are and how we can best provide you with the great content, exciting activities, and useful resources that you expected from Early Childhood Today Magazine. Over the course of these nine months, we’ve added lots of new, exciting features to the site, from our Teachers in Action videos to our Ask the Experts blog — in addition to all the archived articles and searchable activities that you know and trust. We appreciate you making us part of your school year, and hope you’ll continue to find us a source of rich information and exciting activities all summer long!
Happy summertime!
