Why It's Important

Early childhood board books support children’s developmental milestones, helping them go from imitating sounds to recognizing simple letters and words to becoming readers and writers.

Why It Works

Board Books contribute to the early development of a child’s motor skills, cognitive skills, brain development, and pre-literacy patterns. The materials also build parent bonding and parent read-aloud skills. Research indicates that caregivers who read aloud to their preschoolers help them to build better vocabulary skills and expressive language. Children who hear stories, rhymes, and songs regularly are partaking in rich conversations with their parents, helping to strengthen the social and emotional bond between child and adult.
