Why It's Important
Without addressing what happens over the summer months, it’s impossible to close the achievement gap.
Having access to books and other educational resources during the summer months reinforces good learning habits and is critical to maintaining a child’s achievement level. Children who lack the opportunity to read, write, and discuss books will continue to fall behind every summer, eventually making the gap too great to close.
Why It Works
My Books Summer packs are designed to keep kids reading all summer long. The Program supports the new Common Core State Standards by providing students with access to varied texts and writing prompts, resources that help bridge grade level transition expectations, and parent support tools. Summer Reading Packs build text-rich environments by offering age-appropriate, high-interest fiction, nonfiction, and Spanish titles.
