Fascinating & Fun February Activities!

GME Black History Month Research Starter

With Valentines Day, Groundhog Day, Presidents' Day, and Black History Month all occurring in February, there are so many articles, activities, and lesson plans in Grolier Online to help your students and patrons conduct meaningful research and celebrate the holidays.

•  Groundhog Day: The New Book of Knowledge features a creative writing prompt, maze, word search and coloring activity in the weekly Holiday Section.

•  Presidents' Day: America the Beautiful's profile section offers biographies on all of our 44 Presidents. Have each student or patron research a different President and present what they learned to the group.

•  Valentine's Day: The New Book of Knowledge has fun art projects. Let your kids take a study break to make cards, crowns, and baskets to share with the people they love.

•  Black History Month: This month's research starter in Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia (GME) is "Civil Rights and Alabama in the 1960s." Ask your students to read the selected articles and answer one of the recommended research questions. There are also numerous lesson plans related to Black History Month in the For Educators section.

You can also use your free trial to Expert Space to view the xSpace on the Civil Rights Movement, which features a short anchor video, leveled text articles, audio clips, web links, and project ideas.
