Celebrate Women's History Month with Grolier Online!

March is Women's History Month. Over the course of the past century, women have made great advances in the political, social, scientific, corporate, and artistic arenas. Today, in virtually every field, outstanding women play leading roles, proving once and for all that gender should never be an impediment to equality or achievement. Grolier Online features many articles, activities, and lesson plans that celebrate the contributions of women and teach about the struggle for gender equality in the U.S. and around the world.

•  This month's Brain Jam explores the role of women in society and the evolution of the women's rights movement. Articles feature initiative such as the Equal Rights Amendments and profiles of women who helped pave the way for gender equality in future generations.

•  After reading through the Brain Jam, start a group discussion by asking: How much progress has been made in the quest for equality for women, in the United States and in the rest of the world? What are some examples of progress toward equality in areas such as human rights, sports, and politics?

•  Have your students and patrons select a country or region and create a timeline poster with displays that detail important events from women's history in that region. As a group, compare the progress made in women's rights around the world.

•  The New Book of Knowledge feature article, "Order in the Court!: What was Susan B. Anthony's crime? She cast a vote," recounts Susan B. Anthony's trial for casting a vote in the 1872 presidential election. Engage your group by letting them fill out the education crossword puzzle that asks questions like: When did the 19th Amendment become law?
