Catch Up on Current Events
with Grolier Online!

Between the magnitude of the current economic crisis and the excitement behind President-elect Barack Obama's inauguration, there is no better time to encourage kids to follow major news stories. Grolier Online NEWSNOW makes sharing information on current events easier for you and more exciting for your students and patrons. Grolier Online features many resources that will help your students or patrons catch up on breaking news during their winter breaks and throughout the year.
• Daily News Articles: Have your students or patrons read one the of the Daily News articles from the Associated Press each night. Have each child discuss why they believe the story made headlines.
• International News Briefs and World Newspapers: Grolier's International News Briefs are one paragraph synopses of news events from around the world, and the World Newspapers provide students with a searchable database of newspapers from countries worldwide. Have each of your students or patrons chose a different country and report on the major news story from the country they have selected. Encourage them to look for overarching themes in international news.
• From the Editor's Desk: The Editor's Desk offers students an in-depth look at the news, featuring Editorial Opinions, Editors' Picks, and Pro/Con Debates, all of which are accompanied by Teachers' Lesson Plans. Ask your students or patrons to read the Pro/Con Debate and build an argument for either side.
• Feature Stories: This month's Feature Stories include the two major stories in national news— the country’s economic troubles in "The U.S. Financial Crisis" and Barack Obama's cabinet selection and move to the White House in "The Rituals of Inauguration." Use the leading questions to illicit thoughtful written responses from students.
For more age-appropriate news check out Scholastic News Online, which features a wealth of current events information via Special Reports, Kids Press Corps articles, and other news stories written just for your students and patrons.
