Activities and Ideas for Grolier Online Subscribers November 2008

Commemorate National American Indian Heritage Month with Grolier Online!

Screen Shot

National American Indian Heritage Month, first established in 1990, is now celebrated each November to recognize the achievements of American Indians and Alaska Natives and their enormous contributions to the social fabric of the United States. This month’s Brain Jam in Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia provides your students or patrons with various ways to learn about American Indian history, and culture. Below are a few ideas to help motivate discussions and launch assignments throughout the month:

• Have students select a North American Indian tribe covered in the Brain Jam as a subject for in-depth research, using library resources or by searching the Grolier Online database. They will learn about the tribe’s traditional way of life, language and customs, history, and relations with European settlers. Ask your students or patrons to demonstrate what they’ve learned by writing a report, poem, a story, or a fictional journal kept by a tribe member at some point in history.

• Give your students and patrons the opportunity to read and view the various arts and crafts of American Indian tribes. Extend their research by bringing in materials for projects like weaving, beadwork, pottery, and Navajo colored sand paintings.

• Many American Indians have had an important impact on American history and culture. Have your students or patrons learn more about one of the American Indians profiled in the Brain Jam and present a short biography of the person, describing the contribution he or she made to American history and culture.

Visit the For Educators section for additional lesson plans and activities pertaining to American Indian history and culture.
