Activities and Ideas for Grolier Online Subscribers September 2008

LET GROLIER ONLINE BE YOUR WEATHER EYE THIS HURRICANE SEASON!

Screen Shot

Every year hurricanes threaten North America with enormous devastation, as was clearly demonstrated in 2005 when Hurricane Katrina slammed into New Orleans. In a typical year, according to the National Weather Service, hurricane season peaks in September, just as students and patrons have returned to the classroom. Grolier Online includes many articles and features devoted to hurricanes and other forms of extreme weather. Below are a few ideas to help motivate discussions and launch assignments throughout the month:

• If an actual hurricane develops, follow its progress by checking out GO Passport’s Associated Press feed, with stories updated on a daily basis. In addition, you can read in detail about important weather events in the GO Kids and GO Passport news features.

• See how Grolier Online offers a vast selection of articles on hurricanes and other types of storms at a wide range of reading levels! First, conduct a general Find It Fast! search on the topic. On the Search Results screen, the appropriate Lexile value--an indication of an article’s reading level--will appear in brackets next to the titles.

• Turn to the For Educators section for lesson plans on hurricanes and related weather topics.

In fact, for any topic, utilize Grolier Online’s extensive collection of leveled articles, discussion questions, links to prescreened Web sites, and numerous other features as a means to extend lessons and to launch research projects on topics of interest to students.
