Reading Strategies
These materials provide step-by-step lessons for direct instruction of comprehension, vocabulary, and word study. Each lesson features a reading passage (or chart for interpretation) for students with two pages of instruction suggestions for teachers. The reading level of the passages has been controlled to foster student success.
When to use this resource:
- Whole-Group Instruction. Use the passages for shared
reading followed by a corresponding skills lesson.
- Small-Group Instruction. Use the materials for
guided reading, individual or small-group instruction.
- Individual Student Conferences. Use with students who require more one-on-one instruction.

Writing and Grammar Strategies
Includes short, appealing assignments geared to the needs of struggling readers, providing students with an attainable goal and sufficient support to let them experience success.
When to use this resource:
- Whole-Group Instruction. Use during whole-group
to create an interest in the assignment and complete a classroom
activity together to identify key aspects of the given type
of writing in the model.
- Small-Group Instruction. Use with students during
Small-Group to work on completing assignments. Check in
with students periodically and plan time to hold writing
conferences with individuals.

Phonics/Word Study Strategies
Presents strategies for teacher-directed instruction of essential phonics and word analysis skills.
When to use this resource:
- During whole-group or small-group instruction.
- Practice page blackline masters provide opportunities for students to practice and apply word analysis skills in class or at home.

Strategies for English Language Learners
These lessons offer oral-language activities focusing
on listening and speaking skills. Teachers can use these activities
as they help their English-language learners (ELL's) transition
into READ 180 and move towards proficiency. The context-based
activities provide short, engaging ways for ELL's to build
oral vocabulary and develop an ear for English-language conventions.
How to use this resource:
- If a large percentage of the students are ELL's, the activities in this book can be used during whole-group instruction.
- Group ELL's together and present these oral language activities during small-group instruction.

Test-Taking Strategies
These lessons equip students with useful strategies that will give them the confidence and ability to succeed on standardized tests.
When to use this resource:
- During whole-group instruction, teach the lesson.
- During small-group instruction, students can complete the Strategy Practice page. This allows time for students to practice the strategy either independently or in a group.
