Use these convenient checklists to ensure that your
first three weeks are a success; for complete information on getting

WEEK ONE
Enroll in SAM (Scholastic Achievement Manager)
- Make sure that the READ 180 Software is loaded on your computers.
- Add your students to SAM and enroll them in SRI, READ 180, and Scholastic Reading Counts!

Set Up Your Classroom
- Open Your READ 180 QuickStart Kit to help set up your classroom.
- Post labels and procedures for each small-group rotation area.
- Set up an organizational system for handouts that will be used frequently.
Begin Planning
- Open the blue READ 180 teacher crate and begin planning Whole- and Small-Group Instruction using the rBook Teacher’s Edition.
- Create calendar for SRI administration.
- Review student selection criteria in order to know the measures used at the end of the year.
Introduce the Program
- Introduce the Instructional Model to students using the Instructional Model poster.
- Introduce the READ 180 Topic Software to students one zone a day using the demo disc.
- Encourage students to get excited about the Paperbacks by doing a “Book Pass.”

Tips From Noelle: Week One
- Take inventory of your READ 180 materials.
- Save your database onto a backup flash card or CD-ROM.

WEEK TWO
Administer SRI
- Administer the Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) to each student.
Practice Routines
- Teach procedures for each area.
- Have students practice rotating from one area of the classroom to another using the timer.
- Model and practice key Red Routines (e.g., Think (Write)-Pair-Share, Oral Cloze).
Select Books
- Guide students to select books for Modeled and Independent Reading based on their Lexile levels and interests.
Send Letters Home
- Send parent letters home to introduce READ 180.

Tips From Noelle: Week Two
- While enrolling students in the Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI), be sure to “target them as either a below grade level or far below grade level reader.

WEEK THREE
Check a Report
- Check the SRI Intervention Report and the SRI Reading Performance Report.
- Review students’ initial Lexile scores.
Form Small Groups
- Using SRI reports, consider Lexile levels and management concerns to create your initial small groups.
- Post and review the Rotation Chart.
Begin Software
- Have students begin using the READ 180 Topic Software.
- Check in with students as they work in the Instructional Software area.
Start a Workshop
- Begin teaching rBook Workshop 1 during Whole- and Small-Group Instruction.
