2009 READ 180 Outstanding Educator: Nancie Brennan
Edison Middle School, Green Bay, Wisconsin
READ 180 Outstanding Educator Nancie Brennan

Nancie Brennan has the unique job of not only teaching READ 180 to her middle school students, but also teaching educators throughout the district. She is a READ 180 teacher in the morning and a READ 180 Coordinator in the afternoon. Having piloted READ 180 in her district four years ago, Nancie has become a READ 180 expert and thrives on sharing her knowledge.

READ 180 has given my middle school students not only the skills they need to be successful, but also the insight into their abilities rather than their disabilities.” Nancie recognizes the potential for success in each one of her students and feels every student should be honored for their academic achievements. She has even organized a “READ 180 Recognition Night” where parents, friends, and relatives are invited to come to school, share a meal, and celebrate the accomplishments of her READ 180 students. To Nancie, “this is what READ 180 is all about.”

As a READ 180 Coordinator, Nancie understands that READ 180 is only as successful as its teachers, and therefore, she does everything in her power to ensure Green Bay Area School teachers have all of the tools necessary to help their students succeed. By working one-on-one, setting up district-wide trainings, and “Job Alikes” for Professional development, Nancie shares her valuable experience and insight.

Nancie’s peers have cited on her contagious energy, and her students have commented on how she will go the extra mile to make learning fun and educational; even if that means standing on her head to clear the chalk board. Nancie’s energy motivates even the most reluctant students to strive for success. Nancie says, “READ 180 has turned my life around. READ 180 has rejuvenated me. READ 180 has ignited my passion for teaching and made me love my job.”

This year especially, Nancie’s success has paid off. David Boucher, a former student of Nancie’s has also been recognized as one of the nine winners in the 2009 READ 180 All-Star Awards. The READ 180 All-Star awards recognize the outstanding achievements of students who have overcome their reading challenges to succeed in school.
