Reading Counts Oak Grove Middle School

Learn how the students of Oak Grove Middle School have unlocked the mystery of Scholastic Reading Counts!®

Amy Titus is the Library Information Specialist at Oak Grove Middle School. She shared the story of how the terrific Mystery of Reading Counts DVD came to be:

I teach TV production as part of my library media program. Each week, my student TV crews come up with three “short segments” for our morning show, which airs live at Oak Grove Middle School. One of my crews, the “Blue Crew,” came up with the idea to give basic information on Scholastic Reading Counts! – but with a mysterious twist!

The video was scripted, shot, and digitally edited by four students: Lauren Murphy, Alex Hehr, Cody Morse, and Sheila Akhavan. They are all avid readers so that’s probably why they came up with such a clever idea. Alex Hehr is quite into the “Maximum Ride” series by James Patterson and is also a huge fan of the Rick Riordan’s “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” series. Lauren, Sheila, and Cody all read from the Florida Sunshine State Readers list.

Amy went on to explain how Oak Grove uses Scholastic Reading Counts!

In Grades 6-8, Scholastic Reading Counts! is used school-wide for either a classroom grade or extra credit. We do not use a point system because we have so many students at varying levels. Students must read a book in their Lexile® range, or they may select one from a current-year Sunshine State title. We count books read, not points.

We have two reward programs in place for Scholastic Reading Counts! One is specific to Sunshine State, and involves a voters’ pizza party complete with free books, door prizes, and fun! Another has Scholastic Reading Counts! prize levels that any Scholastic Reading Counts! books count toward. Prizes are given at the 5, 10, and 25 books read levels. The top-level students reading and passing 25 Scholastic Reading Counts! quizzes receive a gift card to our neighborhood Borders bookstore to shop-till-they-drop!

As a Library Information Specialist, I find Scholastic Reading Counts! to really be a fun way to motivate kids to both read recreationally and use technology!

Our thanks go to Amy and the students of Oak Grove for sharing their enthusiasm for Scholastic Reading Counts! with everyone, and for showing us a new way that reading can spark students’ creativity.
