Pray-Woodman Elementary School
Reading Counts Pray-Woodman Elementary Children rushed into the library daily for books, quiz taking, and to check how far their classroom car had moved across the map
Last year, Pray-Woodman Elementary in Maize, Kansas first celebrated Read Across America, an annual nationwide reading motivation and awareness program, after Library Media Specialist Sheryl Connell came up with the idea of integrating the program with Scholastic Reading Counts! and the school’s February "Road Trip" themed book fair. Sheryl described the details:

"The MEA (Maize Education Association) and the Pray-Woodman Library Media Center sponsored a "Read Across America" competition through the month of February. U.S. maps in the library tracked each class’s progress, using one Scholastic Reading Counts! point to equal one mile.

The winning class from each grade level earned a party on March 3rd, complete with a visit from The Cat in the Hat (our superintendent, Dr. Pippinger), Dr. Seuss' birthday cake, juice, and two new books for their classroom library. All students participating in the competition also received a "Read Across America" bookmark and a Certificate of Participation."

Sheryl noted that the competition was a huge success, with students in every grade spending all their spare time reading for the Read Across America contest throughout the month of February. It was so successful that Pray-Woodman is holding the contest again in 2009 - only this year they started in January!

Reading Counts Pray-Woodman Elementary Dr. Pippenger read about the Sour Kangaroo in Horton Hears a Who.
With Read Across America Day just a month away, the Scholastic Reading Counts! team encourages all schools who haven’t done so already to follow the fantastic example set by Pray-Woodman and start an annual celebration in their own school communities.

As always, we’d love to hear from you. Please feel free to share your school’s Read Across America program with us!
