Chato's friend, Novio Boy, has never had a birthday party. As a matter of fact, he doesn't even know when his birthday is because he's from the pound. So Chato, being the good friend that he is, decides to throw him one - a "pachanga," and everyone is invited - including you! Narrated by Luis Guzman.
DVD includes both English and Spanish versions with subtitles.
Reviews:
AudioFile: “Luis Guzman narrates with Spanish flair. The accompanying music is exuberant… (a) fine story of friendship.”
School Library Journal: “There’s lot of music and Hispanic soul in this video which uses the boldly colored artwork from the book and animates small portions of it…. The male narrator brings Chato to life, with a hint of the cocky attitude of a leader in his ‘hood.’ This video hums with life as it spins its message about friendship, Hispanic culture and birthdays…. Kids will beg to see this video over and over again. Even older students studying Spanish will be hooked on Chato’s tale. This one’s a winner!”
Booklist: “Lively, and sometimes tender Latin-inspired music reflects various moods in the story…. Animation enhances the pleasure, curiosity and compassion reflected in the creatures’ faces… (an) excellent adaptation.”
Awards:
Book Awards: ALA Notable Book; Pura Belpre Medal Book Film Awards: 2004 Audie Award; Bronze Remi, 2004 Worldfest-Houston; CINE Golden Eagle
