1) What is one thing that needs to change in order to keep quality teachers in the profession?

Tell us about the teacher who meant the most to you when you were growing up.

Barbara M. Forshag, 2001
State Teacher of the Year, Louisiana
Barbara Forshag has been in the classroom for 22 years, but her family will tell you she was born a teacher. Growing up in a housing project in New Orleans, Barbara spent a lot of time playing school with her two brothers, one of them her twin. She loved school and frequently spent afternoons in the library. Books were her escape into a world of riverboats, mysteries, and faraway places. Now, Barbara helps middle school students to make those same escapes by modeling a love for books. In 1995, Mrs. Forshag was certified by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards in Early Adolescents English/Language Arts.

Scholastic is the proud corporate sponsor of the National Teacher of the Year Program.
