Elaine Hendrickson, 2001
State Teacher of the Year, Maine
Upon graduating from the University of Maine in 1973, Elaine Hendrickson taught sixth grade in Washburn. During this time, she created and coordinated the Young Authors' Institute for students in grades 4 to 8 from Aroostook County, in which students from 16 school districts became published authors. In 1994, Elaine moved to Skyway Middle School in Presque Isle where she teaches seventh grade English. Last summer, she traveled to Germany and Poland with the Holocaust Human Rights Center of Maine to further her understanding of the Holocaust to share with her students. She piloted first the New Standards Portfolio and now the Maine Assessment Portfolio with her seventh grade students. She served on the development committee for the Maine Educational Assessment Test. The Maine Commissioner of Education invited Elaine to represent middle school teachers on the state level Maine Educational Assessment Policy Advisory Committee to help with local assessment systems.
