Dorene Harris Lowery, 2001
State Teacher of the Year, Tennessee
Dorene Harris Lowery, Tennessee's State Teacher of the Year 2001, has taught for 17 years. Since 1984, she has taught elementary grades 4, 5 and 6. She was the first teacher in Bradley County to direct and produce a dinner theater for elementary students. Her project has been emulated by other schools in the system and community with great success. She has achieved the title "Top Point Earning Class" in the Accelerated Reader Program for both Bradley County and Cleveland City Systems for 1997–98, 1998–99, and 1999–2000. Recently she has been appointed to the Tennessee Governor's Textbook Commission. Humor is one of her favorite classroom tools. She lightens the mood of students by telling "Gold Box Stories." These are true, funny, and enlightening stories and adventures of her childhood and present life. Among her accomplishments, she is a published author. Her first book, Gold Box Stories, is now in print.
