Jovita Idar, Journalist

1885-1946

As a journalist, Jovita Idar wrote about the problems of Mexican Americans for the Spanish-language newspapers in Texas. In 1911, she and her family organized a large educational and cultural conference, El Primer Congreso Mexicanisto (First Mexican Congress). That same year she co-founded La Liga Femenil Mexcanista (The League of Mexican Women), which focused its work on education for poor children. During the Mexican Revolution, Idar organized La Cruz Blanca (the White Cross) to nurse the wounded on both sides of the battle. Throughout her life she was active in causes important to Mexican Americans, as an interpreter, journalist, and educator.
