The daughter and granddaughter of Paiute Indian chiefs from Nevada, Sarah Winnemucca was later named a chief in her own right. She spent her adult life calling public attention to the terrible treatment of Indians under U.S. government policies, and lobbying Congress to improve conditions for her people on the reservation they had been forced to occupy. She wrote extensively and traveled across the country to lecture on the difficult situation facing the Paiutes and other Indian nations. As a result of her work, Congress eventually approved a grant of land in Nevada for Indian use.
