Afghan Kids Answer Your Questions

Amatullah (center front) lives in a rural farming community in Nangarhar. He has two older brothers and an older sister [standing behind him in photo]. After he has finished his chores he likes to play with friends and siblings in the irrigation stream that runs by his family's home.

Are you allowed to play with children of the opposite gender?

Answer: Yes. We can here, but I heard that in the cities they don't let boys and girls play together after they turn 12. My sister is 14 and she and her friends can come play with me sometimes. But lots of families don't allow it because they think it will make others lose respect for the girl. Soon my sister will be engaged and then she will have to stay inside.
