A Trip to the Circus
By Jonathan Amdur

Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus This year, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus has gotten a makeover. Audiences follow all the action happening in one giant ring, instead of the traditional three.

  • Two clowns from the circus—Dean and Jesse—took some time to talk to our kid reporters. Read what they had to say.

  • See what Kid Reporter Jennifer Shapp has to say about her trip to the circus.

  • Learn what it's like to be an circus animal trainer.

  • Read about a new training program that is helping kids get fit.

  • Check out this slideshow for pictures from under the big top.

  • It's hard to believe, but "The Greatest Show On Earth" just got even better. Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus has recently been redesigned to give audience members a whole new experience. It's not just a new look. There's a new story to go with the show.

It wasn't like anything I expected. Before my visit I thought it would look like your typical circus—three rings and a few special acts—a human cannonball, a lion tamer, and some clowns. Then, I caught the big show at Nassau Coliseum in Long Island, New York. This circus came as quite a surprise! I saw everything, from singers and acrobats to elephants.

The new format follows a story line, instead of being broken into different acts. Throughout the show, you follow different characters from one family. A lot of the story, though, focuses on the youngest child in the family. At first, this boy doesn't know what he wants to do. But as the show continues, he starts to find out different things that he can do well.

One of my favorite parts was the food fight. Thanks to the elephants, food kept hitting the clowns. Then things got confusing. The clowns on one side seemed to think that the clowns on the other side were the ones who were throwing the food, and vice versa. They ended up in a big food fight—and a giant mess!

The new show is like nothing I've ever seen! I spent the whole time on the edge of my chair, waiting to see what surprises would be next. I wish that I could go back and see it again, but the circus has to move on to another city. Be sure to catch "The Greatest Show on Earth" when it comes to your town.
