Brooklyn School Interviews Congressman Towns
By the PS 332 Scholastic News Team and teachers Ms. Ludvigsen and Ms. Dunn-Paine

Congressman Edolphus Towns easily won re-election to his 11th term in Congress on Tuesday. Why such an easy ride? He didn't have an opponent to challenge him in his Brooklyn district!

The eighth-grade students on the Scholastic News election team were excited about interviewing Congressman Edolphus Towns. Our class had researched the Congressman's career highlights and awards. Each student was prepared with at least one question. The Scholastic News team participants are also all in the Scholastic Read 180 program.

When Congressman Towns entered our classroom, we were quite apprehensive. Congressman Towns was wise, informative, and a great speaker.

"He answered all of our questions, and if I was old enough to vote I would vote to re-elect him," said student Jeanene Bennett.

Towns told the class to "stay in school, learn as much as you can, and watch your attitudes!"

The students thought that this was good advice and expressed their appreciation.

Katria Scott said Congressman Towns encouraged her to become more active in the community. He encouraged her to attend tenant meetings, athletic functions, community meetings, and church organizations. He said it is important to be involved and talk about the needs of youths today.

The election is days away and we will be holding mock elections in our classroom. We'll keep you posted on our results.
