Cornyn Wins Senate Seat
Texas Attorney General John Cornyn will now serve in the U.S. Senate. The Republican defeated Democrat Ron Kirk, who hoped to make history as the first black Senator from Texas. Only three black Senators have been elected since the post-Civil War era, and none from the South.
"We didn't get into this race just to make history, but we did," Kirk told a crowd of 500 at Fair Park. "I could be sad, but I'm not. Listen, my mom, who struggled to pay the poll tax when I was born, had a chance to vote for her baby boy to be the United States Senator for the state of Texas." Kirk was the first black Mayor of Dallas, one of the state's largest cities.
Cornyn joined Governor Rick Perry in celebrating Republican victories in the state. Perry replaced Governor George W. Bush when Bush was elected President. He won the seat in his own right Tuesday. Both candidates benefited from President Bush's help. Bush made his final push for Cornyn on Monday night at a rally at Southern Methodist University.
While the margin was smaller, the win was still decisive.
