John Kerry, Democrat
Age: 59
State: Massachusetts
Current Job: Senator
Family: wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry; two children; three stepsons

Strengths: John Kerry's status as a war hero who was wounded in Vietnam makes him strong in an area where Democrats are normally weak: foreign affairs and national security. He is a strong advocate for veterans' rights. Kerry's record as a U.S. Senator is strong on environmental issues, such as ocean pollution and global warming.

Weaknesses: Many think that Kerry is aloof and difficult to understand. His opponents say that he avoids stating his opinions on issues. Recently, he has been criticized for avoiding stating his views on Iraq.

Best Issues: A Vietnam veteran, Kerry co-founded Vietnam Veterans of America and continues to fight for veterans’ rights. As a former soldier and current politician, he says he is in an unusual position to understand what the country needs to create national security. He wants to reform public education and address children's issues by ensuring good teachers, smaller classes, and character education.
