Wednesday, September 1Out of many people who spoke tonight, Zell Miller stood out. Miller is a U.S. Senator from Georgia, but there is one thing different about him that's different from other speakers at the convention. He's a Democrat!
The Senator was the keynote speaker. His speech made history because it was the first time anyone has given a keynote address to the opposing party's convention.
Miller took a few stabs at his fellow party member, John Kerry, and explained why he wants George W. Bush to serve another four years. "There is but one man to whom I am willing to entrust [my family's] future and that man's name is George Bush," Miller said.
Miller said he disagreed with Kerry's vote in the Senate against weapons system he said won the Cold War.
"No one should dare to even think about being the Commander in Chief of this country if he doesn't believe with all his heart that our soldiers are liberators abroad and defenders of freedom at home," Miller said.
People who know Miller have labeled him as tough, hard, aggressive, and smart. These factors showed in his speech. But some people, both Democrats and Republicans, questioned Miller's attacks on Kerry.
"Well, Zell Miller is a very experienced politician," said Republican Senator John McCain, who also spoke at the convention. "I'm sure he knew exactly what he was talking about. [But] I just don't agree with the [charge] that the Democrats are unpatriotic or the assertion that the Democrats are unpatriotic. I don't think they are."
Miller ended his speech by saying that this election will change the course history. "In this hour of danger our President has had the courage to stand up. And this Democrat is proud to stand up with him," he said.
