Scholastic Student Reporter Visits DreamWorks Studio
Discover What's New on the Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron DVD

What does it take to make a DVD like Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron? Scholastic Student Reporter Dorothy Young wanted to know, so we sent her to Southern California to talk to animators and producers at DreamWorks Studio.

The new DVD features several animation firsts and becomes available in stores this month. The 1,798 scenes and 42 sequences were produced by combining traditional and computer animation for a wide-screen panoramic masterpiece.

More than 1,500 different horse vocals were used, all recorded from real horses, to enhance the sound. The creative team visited eight western National Parks to get the details right for the wide-open spaces in scenes of the Old West. More than 1,037,000 drawings were produced over a period of three years to create Spirit.

The DVD, however, contains much more than the movie. On her trip, Dorothy learned about the Make-A-Movie studio which allows you to combine backgrounds, music, effects, and characters from the film to make your own Spirit movie. You can even download your own pictures from the movie and insert yourself and your friends in them.

You can also learn to draw with animator James Baxter and play a variety of games and activities.
