Ahmad Chalabi, the leader of an Iraqi opposition group, said this week that Saddam Hussein was alive and moving around the country. He claimed that his intelligence officers were only half a day away from him. In an interview with NBC News recently, U.S. President George W. Bush said he believed Saddam was killed during the early days of the war. The U.S. coalition troops are now firmly in control of Iraq. Does it matter if Saddam Hussein is still alive or not?

Will it matter to Iraq's future if Saddam Hussein is alive or dead?

Yes
As long as he is alive, people will be afraid of his return to power. They will be less likely to work toward a free and democratic Iraq. Also, his supporters may be inspired to continue fighting, leading to more casualties on both sides. He must be found to stop any possible uprisings.

No
Saddam Hussein is no longer in control of Iraq and he never will be again. He has been removed from office and Iraq is already working toward forming a new government. Ultimately they will elect new leaders. Saddam is yesterday's news. Progress in Iraq will move on without him.
