Star Spotlight

Justin Chon plays the basketball-playing, restaurant-working teen, Tony Lee, on the hit Nickelodeon show, Just Jordan. He's having an amazing time working on the show with Lil' JJ and the rest of the cast. Justin has been acting professionally for two years, and made a name for himself as Peter Wu in the Disney Channel movie Wendy Wu: Homecoming Warrior, and as a guest star on The O.C. and Jack & Bobby. We had a chance to sit down with Justin. Here's what he had to say about his TV character, surfing, and much more:

Why did Justin become an actor?

Q & A

Q: Did you do any restaurant research before you took the role of Tony Lee on Just Jordan?

Justin Chon: Yes. A few of my friends were waiters and I would go to their restaurants to watch how they worked. It's pretty amazing how they have to be on top of their game at all times and remember 50 things at once—who ordered what while serving 10 tables at a time. You get used to it, but you have to have a good memory.

Q: Do you think it would be fun to work in a restaurant?

Justin: I'd love to work in a restaurant. You get to meet new people all the time and constantly socialize. There are no dull moments when you're serving. It would definitely be a fun job to have.

Q: You grew up in southern California and you like to surf—where do you like to surf?

Justin: My favorite place when I'm at home in Irvine is San Clemente Pier. I like taking it easy, so three-to-five foot waves are perfect for me. I've been surfing for about 10 years.

Q: Your dad was an actor in South Korea—did he have any advice for you when you started acting?

Justin: He was extremely worried. But he just said: "Give it a try, and try your best." I just stuck to what he suggested and it's worked out.

Q: Describe Tony from Just Jordan to us.

Justin: He's pretty dorky—in a cool way. He's really talented. He's really good at basketball. He's a hard worker. He has a lot of good traits. But at the same time, he's not the smoothest person. He's very real. He is what he is, and he doesn't try to be something [he isn't].

Q: Would he be a friend of yours?

Justin: Definitely!

Q: Give us a short description of your co-stars.

Justin: JJ is the coolest guy—he's going to be the next big thing. I haven't seen him do stand-up, but I’ve seen bits that he'll do in front of us, and he's hilarious. He's very natural, too. It's not forced. Raven [Goodwin] has a lot of character. She's a really cool person. Eddie [Martin] is a nerd that you definitely want to be friends with! Kristen [Combs] is the most adorable little girl that I've ever met. Chelsea [Harris] is a lady.

Q: Do you have any advice for kids?

Justin: In life, try your best to do the right thing. Have fun while you're alive. Take advantage of every asset you have. Don't take anything for granted.
