Star Spotlight

You may have seen Bobby Coleman each week as Jesse Daugherty on NBC's underwater creep-fest, Surface, but this rising star is just getting started in the spotlight. He's got not one, but two big screen movies on the way this year. Scholastic News Online recently caught up with Bobby to get the exclusive scoop on the secrets of Surface, and what he likes to do for fun. Here's what he had to say:

Q & A

Q: What grade are you in? What is your favorite subject and why?

Bobby: I'm in third grade. My favorite subject is science. It's really fun to learn how things work and to try to build things. I want to be an inventor/scientist when I grow up, but I'm trying to build things now. I want to build a robot, and my friend and I plan it all the time. One day, I want to figure out how fish breathe and I want to make a machine that can do that, so people can go deeper in the ocean and discover more fish.

Q: How long have you been interested in acting?

Bobby: Since I was born. My sister, Holliston, acts, and I was always there with her. After being on the set with my sister so much, I wanted to try it too.

Q: Is auditioning for a part difficult?

Bobby: It's pretty easy, but crying is really hard. It's not too hard for me to remember my lines, but I do have to work on memorizing them and saying them with the correct feeling. I really, really wanted [the part in] Zathura, because I love space and I loved the black hole.

Q: Do you have scenes with any of the creatures in Surface?

Bobby: I haven't had any scenes yet with the creatures. I hope I will!

Q: What do you think alien creatures might look like?

Bobby: I'm not sure what they would look like, but I hope they would be nice. I draw tons of amazing creatures. Most of them can fly and have big jaws with sharp teeth. I draw sea creatures and space creatures. My mom and dad think other people should see them. My dad wants to make a Web site to show my creatures and my sister's, and mom's artwork.

Q: Is there a book you would like to see made into a movie so you could star in it?

Bobby: I really want to be in Where the Wild Things Are, by Maurice Sendak. I had one audition for it, which was really exciting because I got to go crazy and be a wild boy with my friends.

Q: What do you like to read about when you're reading for fun?

Bobby: My favorite books are books about fossils, minerals, space, and the Egyptians who used to live a long time ago. They're very interesting. I learn a lot and love the pictures. I've even found a few of the fossils in my fossil books. Where Surface is filmed, there's a cool quarry where they let you look for fossils. I found fossilized poop and it was really cool! I also found a fossilized alligator tooth that was huge! For fiction, I like the "Magic Tree House" books because I learn about history.

Q: If you could invite three people to dinner, who would they be and why?

Bobby: Alien creatures because I would love to get a picture of them and ask them, "What do you do in space and what's your planet like? How did you get here?" Stuff like that.

Q: What is the best advice you ever got?

Bobby: When I'm upset, my dad always says, "It's more fun being happy!"
