Star Spotlight

On the new NBC series, Surface, Carter Jenkins play Miles, a teenager who discovers a sea creature and brings it onto land. What are these creatures, and what mysteries are lurking deep below the surface of the sea? To find out, you’ll have to watch the show, but before you do, check out our exclusive interview with Carter to learn all about the show and this rising star!

When did Carter know that he wanted to try acting?

Q & A

Q: Tell us about Surface and your character on the show.

Carter: Surface is about a mysterious new form of sea life that some people are beginning to encounter. My character, Miles, encounters it when he is with some friends. He ends up going back to the place where he saw it and finds eggs. He takes one home, so it is going to be an adventure.

Q: Have you ever gone sailing or diving in real life?

Carter: I have never gone diving. The most I've done is snorkeling. I used to live on a lake, so I have been in the water a lot.

Q: What is the mysterious new form of sea life going to look like?

Carter: It is going to be under wraps for a while until they actually show it, but we don’t know yet.

Q: You're big into playing sports. What position did you play for baseball and for football?

Carter: For baseball I pitched and played shortstop. For football I played quarterback most of the time. I don't get a chance to do that now that I am a full-time actor.

Q: Do you ever get a chance for a quick pick-up football or basketball game somewhere?

Carter: Once in a while I get some friends together and we all go out and play football at the park, go to the batting cages, or something. I just did a movie where I got to play baseball—Bad News Bears. That was really cool because I actually got to play some baseball.

Q: Did all the people casting for Bad News Bears have to know how to play baseball or were they taught when they were on set?

Carter: Some of them [had to know]. They were pretty good. I actually had to pitch most of the time because my character was a pitcher. Some of the kids had baseball coaches on the set at all times. They did teach us a lot and we practiced a lot.

Q: How does a coach instill team spirit ideals in the players?

Carter: I think if the team gets to know each other and spends a lot of time with each other, they become a unit and work together. If they practice enough, then they will definitely become a team.

Q: When did you first know that you wanted to act?

Carter: I used to live in Florida. When I was seven, I found out that my sister had a friend whose mother was an acting coach. I thought that was really cool, so I asked my mom if I could go to classes. I did and I enjoyed it. I just kept going and I found my way to California.

Q: What do you love most about acting?

Carter: Going through the different experiences that [the average] person has maybe not gone through. I have never encountered a sea creature, but now I get to so it is pretty cool. It is also a blast being in the role.
