Star Spotlight

Matt Dallas and Kirsten Prout star in Kyle XY, an original drama from ABC Family about a mysterious teenager with some very unique abilities. We recently talked to Matt and Kirsten about the show, their all-time favorite movies, and the books that inspire them. Here's what they had to say:

Want to be an actor? Listen to Kirsten's advice.

Q & A

Q: Tell us a little about Kyle XY.

Matt: The show is about this boy who is found in the woods, covered in pink goo. He acts as if he's a newborn, but he actually looks like a teenager, so he experiences everything for the first time. This family takes him in, and [he learns] about society and humanity. As the series goes on, you start to [learn] all of these crazy things about Kyle. He uses 90 percent of his brain as opposed to normal humans, who use only about 10 percent, and he doesn't have a belly button.

Kirsten: I was so excited to work on [Kyle XY]. It is one of those series that you watch, and when you stop watching it, you remember it. It really sticks in your head.

Q: How did you prepare for the role?

Matt: Honestly, it was definitely one of the most fun things that I have done. It was challenging, because I was in almost every scene, but I probably had a total of five lines in the whole pilot. I prepared for it by trying to really get into that place [of experiencing] everything for the first time.

Kirsten: I play the love interest, basically the girl next door. It is definitely a character with depth, which is a nice change. I really wanted to get involved in this project because it is one of those shows [where] you can challenge yourself—which I enjoy doing as an actor.

Q: When you were in school, was there ever someone who was different or not understood? How did you relate to him or her?

Matt: To be honest with you, when I was a kid, I was always different. I really wasn't like all the other kids who were into sports, so that made me the weird kid, or the different kid. A lot of the friends I had were different too, so I never really ran with the popular crowd.

Q: Did you feel isolated, or were you happy?

Matt: There were times when it was really hard; being that you're little and vulnerable at that time. But I didn't try to conform, and I am sure that helped a lot with [my role as] Kyle; I am sure that helped with that feeling of being alone a lot of the time, but still staying honest to who you are.

Q: Do you like to read?

Matt: I like to read. I would like to do more reading.

Kirsten: I am definitely a literature and English person. I am always into different books. I love reading. I love Shakespeare. I love anything like that.

Q: Have you read a book in the last six months that really impressed you?

Matt: I read The Alchemist [by Paulo Coelho] for the second time, right as I was auditioning for Kyle. That book just spoke to me. I think it's such an amazing book. I would say that's probably one of the most influential books that I have read.

Kirsten: Yes, I read books from the Alice series [by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor]. I love them. I was in stitches the entire time!

Q: Do you have a favorite place or time to read?

Matt: My favorite time is when I am traveling. I love being on airplanes, or in airports, or on trains. I like the feeling of being away from home, [and] out of your element. That’s when I read the most and enjoy it.

Q: What do you like to do when you're not working?

Matt: I can honestly say that I live in the movie theater by my house. I am there all the time. I like camping, I like to go skiing, and I like hanging out with my friends.

Q: Do you have a favorite movie?

Matt: I really like Pete's Dragon and Old Yeller. Those two movies are my favorite movies. We used to have a yellow lab too, so maybe that's why I liked it so much. We used to call him Old Yeller all the time and we would sing the song to him.

Kirsten: I've got so many: The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, Pretty in Pink, This Is Spinal Tap, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Footloose, and of course, Labyrinth.

Q: What would you like your fans to know about you?

Matt: I am not afraid to be considered a dork.
