"I'm an all-American girl," says pop singer Jordan Pruitt proudly. And a versatile one, too. "I can go without make-up and go fishing with my dad; other times, I buy pink shoes and shop for dresses." Scholastic News Online met up with Jordan after she got off the High School Musical and Cheetah Girls concert tours. We had lots of questions. Here are her answers!

Q & A

Q: When did you know that you wanted to sing professionally?

Jordan Pruitt: I auditioned for a play in fifth grade and that's when I knew that I wanted to be a singer and performer.

Q: How did you go about doing that?

Jordan: My Dad was the music minister at my church. He [introduced me to] my first manager, and we did a demo CD when I was in fifth grade. I wrote all my own songs, and did all my own background vocals. A few years later, in eighth grade, I met my manager/producer Keith Thomas.

Q: You co-wrote some of the songs on your album No Ordinary Girl, right?

Jordan: Yes, I cowrote 12 of the 14 songs on my album.

Q: What is your writing process?

Jordan: I just write about my life. I think about important things that happen in life. Like feeling left out at school—all kinds of issues.

Q: What do you mean by that?

Jordan: Sixth grade was definitely a hard year for me. I got left out because I didn't go to any of the parties or hang out with the "cool kids." I was focusing on my academics. I wasn't allowed to go to any of the parties. I'm still not!

Q: What grade are you in now?

Jordan: I'm in tenth grade. This is my first year of being homeschooled.

Q: What subject do you like best?

Jordan: I love history.

Q: Do you like to read?

Jordan: I have to read six books this year for school or I don't graduate—according to my Mom! But I get to pick the books. I'm reading this book right now called The Uglies. It's a novel.

Q: Is there a celebrity or a historical figure that you would like to meet or have met?

Jordan: I think I would want to meet Elvis Presley.

Q: Have you ever been to Graceland?

Jordan: I haven't. I'd really like to go!
