Star Spotlight

Ashley Tisdale has become a household name. She stars as Maddie on The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, and won hearts as Sharpay Evans, a delightfully scheming drama queen, in the popular Disney Channel movie High School Musical. Scholastic News Online recently caught up with this rising star and asked her about her new recording contract with Warner Bros., the success of High School Musical, and a whole lot more! Here's what she had to say:

Ashley has a daily motto that she lives by!

Q & A

Q: You play Maddie on The Suite Life of Zack and Cody. In real life, would you want her to be a friend of yours?

Ashley: Yes. Maddie is pretty cool; she is funny and sarcastic. She is kind of like a friend of mine that I grew up with.

Q: Do you feel there is pressure to be a good role model for teens and pre-teens?

Ashley: I would not say there is pressure. It is exciting for me to be on a channel where you have fans that look up to you. That is really cool. I don't feel any pressure because I am pretty much the person that everyone sees me as. I really am the girl next door who works really hard.

Q: You have an album coming out in a few months. Tell us about that.

Ashley: I always wanted to do an album, even before I was on the Disney Channel. I remember someone telling me to just take my time. I sang on a couple of episodes of The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, but that was as my character, Maddie. When I booked High School Musical, it's weird, but it was kind of fate. It was just meant to happen. Now I have a recording contract at Warner Bros. It's the coolest thing.

Q: You recently made a music video for the song "Kiss the Girl" for The Little Mermaid DVD. Tell us about that.

Ashley: It's my first single. It's my first real debut of my music video. The Little Mermaid was my favorite movie as a child. I really loved it. There's just something magical about it. You just get chills watching it.

Q: How do you feel about being part of the phenomenally successful High School Musical?

Ashley: It's crazy. I never imagined that happening. I just thought it was going to be really good for the Disney Channel, and it was so much fun for us to do. It's exciting. I haven't changed as a person at all. The only thing that has changed, is that my life has gotten crazier, and busier, and I'm on covers of magazines that I've read since I was little. It's so weird to go to a grocery store and see my face on a magazine. It's really funny!

Q: What was high school like for you? Did you sing and dance?

Ashley: I was never in theater in high school. I didn't really know anyone. All of these kids had grown up with each other, and I was just the new girl who was quiet, but then I kind of broke out of my shell and hung out with people. I was always mingling with everybody. There wasn't just one particular group that I was in.

Q: If you had to choose acting or singing for a career, which would you choose?

Ashley: I can't choose! I love acting and singing. I can't say which one I love more.
