Formal Assessment Ideas

Quizzes
Use the quizzes and games throughout the site to assess how much students have learned. Many quizzes score students' work automatically, providing instant feedback. For others, answers are available on the site so that students can score themselves.

Writing Rubric
Have students try one of the many writing activities described in the lesson plans. Use written work to assess understanding of content as well as writing skills. For a handy rubric to use, click here.

Online Portfolio
If you have a class home page, create an online portfolio for each student in your class. Through the year, work with students to select the best examples of their work from the various activities and lessons described on this site. Post these work samples in the portfolio so that proud students can share their work with family and friends. Examples of posted work might include stories or captions created for "Write the Caption," observations made during a hands-on Super Science experiment, an insightful news almanac entry, or a brief news report created for "Kid to Kid News."
